I hear statistics all day long. But I just heard one that really struck me, so I’m taking a moment to write out some thoughts on it, with regards to PR – Public Relations. I’m asked regularly as to why businesses need “PR” and the quote below, is going to be one of my responses in the future. You need PR because….
“94% of people view multiple media before making a purchasing decision” Demand Gen, 2012.
It doesn’t matter if you do it yourself, we do it for you, or you get another agency to do it for you. Just get on with doing it! PR is to me, an all encompassing term now. It’s not sending out a press release by email, phoning Journo’s to “follow up / check they’ve received it” (because you know that’s their number 1 biggest bugbear, don’t you?) and then calling to ask them why they didn’t feature you / your product in their magazine / newspaper. PR is all about relationships – with people in your trade, your peers, your current customers, your potential customers and your previous customers. And that’s before I get to PR being about relationships with journalists themselves!
One of the easiest ways to start doing your own PR is to utilise social media. If Marketing is talking to other people about yourself and PR is other people talking about you, then social media is a way of getting other people to talk about you and do PR for you! You just need to give them something to talk about! So get yourself a blog, onto Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram – anything that gets you out there, and have a go at it. Put something about yourself, your product, your services – the who, where, when, what, how and why of your work and give people something to talk about!
In getting out there, you are giving people the opportunity to find out more about you and your work and helping them make a purchasing decision. You are helping yourself to help them to buy from you. That last sentence sounds like something Tom Cruise would have said in Jerry Maguire! But I hope you’ll know what I meant!
Does this make sense? I was going to not publish this blog post until I’d had time to sit down and do a perfect job on it, but actually, sometimes, we just need to put something “out there”, so that’s what I’m going to do with this blog. After I’ve spell checked it ;)
