In her second Weston Comms blog post, Nickie explains the value of Google Plus for business.
Google Plus is possibly the greatest social media platform that no-one is using… effectively! There are currently over 300 million people using Google Plus and your customers are in there somewhere.
We have been watching and interacting with digital publishers on Google Plus as they are the best placed users and the ones to take notice of. They know that Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) has been built into the platform to ensure that quality content is incorporated in to the Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). In layman’s terms, this means that if you use Google Plus in specific and recommended ways, your content will appear higher in results list when people search using Google. And as a business, that’s what we all strive for – to be top of that results page. And that is what is SEO.
Why does SEO matter?
Let’s backtrack a bit and talk about SEO. There are two types; black hat SEO and white hat SEO. Black hat SEO is BAD optimisation. This is where a brand has paid for links on anchor text from other websites to boost its position in the SERPs. A clear cut example of this is the 2013 case against Interflora’s Mother’s Day campaign when Google all but removed Interflora from the search results for all their major keywords (e.g. flowers, mother’s day, floral gifts). The penalty was removed after Interflora worked to remove all their black hat SEO following Google’s Webmaster guidelines. In a more positive aspect, white hat SEO is GOOD optimisation. Here we hope for natural links in from other reputable and relevant websites and we construct content following the thoughts of humans using ‘long tail linking’, i.e. a whole phrase one might type into a search engine rather than a single keyword.
Of course, we have tools and plugins for our websites that help us determine and embed specific keywords and phrases (metadata) for our content. This can be backed up with fresh content in an accompanying blog post. We can also use Google Plus to our advantage to boost our SEO in a few ways.
How can you get started with Google Plus?
Initially you need to create your Google Plus page. You then need to circle (follow) fellow Google Plus users that will be complimentary to the content you are going to share. We also advise joining a community (group) or two that is specific to your business. Here at Weston Communications we can help you with that.
Once your identity is established on Google Plus you can start to share content to specific users, circles and communities. The ideal Google Plus post is constructed in exactly the same way a website article is: headline, sub-header, content, links, images. Content you share on Google Plus gives weight to the corresponding webpage (or link) and every interaction on your Google Plus content gives it a Google ‘boost’ hence the need to share appropriate content to the correct audience.
An established presence on Google Plus is a small yet very important part of placing your company online and using social media however there aren’t many people who haven’t heard the word “Google”. It is the only brand name that has become a verb. Don’t believe us? Just Google it…
